The Truckin' Suger Glider, a carer's story by Jae

Late one night whilst manning the WIRES phone I had a call come in from member of the public (MOP) in Tamworth regarding a small glider that he had found in the back of his truck near the battery box. After asking the MOP where  he thought it might have come from his reply was, “Not sure it could have been 1 of 2 places!”

He’d picked up the trailer from Gladstone in Queensland but on his way down to Tamworth he stopped overnight at a friend’s place at Petersbough & parked the truck & trailer under a tree out the front. So you can see my dilemma, where had the glider come from.

After a physical examination I discovered he was a she, a little bit on the skinny side but who wouldn't have been after travelling so far in the back of a truck trailer. Anyway with some very clever ideas in mind I started to build a cage for her with, branches, flowers, climbing ropes & her own personal little hiddie hole. After some time in care she started to make a heck of a racket so it was time to organise a much larger cage. Setting her up in a small bird aviary she was well on the way to regaining her weight & eating me out of house & home. After some very frustrating phone calls trying to organise a lift back up to where we had decided she’d come from, finally success (it  was like trying to pull teeth. Sometimes)

Thanks to an ex WIRES member my sweet little sugar glider finally got her lift back up into Queensland & was released onto a property that was renown for Sugar Gliders. It was nothing short of a real pleasure to look after her, she is missed but not forgotten..
