WIRES Central Northern NSW A bit of history.....

In 1985, an injured Ibis was discovered at Hyde Park in the middle of Sydney CBD.  At that time there were no Government, Conservation or Animal Welfare groups able to take responsibility for the bird’s rescue, care and rehabilitation.  It was as a direct result of that incident that a small group of passionate individuals established WIRES (The NSW Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service Incorporated.)

By 1990 the number of members had grown to 175 and today we have approx 2,600 dedicated members.  From that modest beginning of rescuing and caring for wildlife over twenty years ago,  WIRES has now become a co-ordinated network of skilled wildlife carers and rescuers covering most of NSW. We currently have 28 branches state-wide.

WIRES is constantly growing and becoming more professional and we are very proud of what we have achieved since establishment twenty-three years.  We are now harnessing good working structures as never before which helps us to do our work in a much more active and effective way.  Being able to rescue and rehabilitate native animals and by continuing to produce up-to-date educational material for the public, means WIRES mission is being accomplished.

On a local level WIRES Central Northern is not far behind the founding members based in Sydney.  In 1989 a few local people travelled and trained with Helen George and became part of the WIRES New England branch.  However over time it that the tyranny of distance was going to be a hindrance as far as attending meetings etc. and it was decided by the group of locals to form a new branch based in Tamworth. Therefore, in January 1991 we held our first Basic Training course, elected a Committee and formed WIRES Tamworth.  We outgrew our WIRES “Tamworth” shoes rather quickly as the branch area extended from Moree to Scone with lots of places in between, so the name was changed shortly thereafter to WIRES “Central Northern NSW” which now gives a more accurate description of the branch’s area of coverage.

WIRES CN now averages around sixty members, which may sound a lot but with such a very large area to cover and we are always looking for more volunteers.  WIRES CN receives more than 2,000 calls a year for information or assistance and the number is increasing all the time.
