Caring for Sick or Injured Wildlife

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep injured or sick wildlife?

No. Sick or injured wildlife needs specialised care, diets and treatment which will assist them in being successfully released back into their natural habitats. Only trained members of licensed wildlife care groups can provide ongoing care for native animals.

How can I get involved in caring for wildlife?

If you are keen to care for and/or rescue wildlife you must become a member of a recognised and licensed wildlife care group such as WIRES. These groups can provide training, resources and insurance, and you will become a valued member of a friendly and active group.

Want to keep a native animal as a pet?

All native mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians and many species of native plants are protected in NSW by the National Parks and Wildlife Act. You'll need to get a licence from the NPWS if you want to keep native animals as pets. Native animals cannot be taken from the wild, they can only be acquired from licensed dealers, breeders and aviary owners. You cannot keep injured or sick wildlife as pets, they must also be cared for by licensed groups.
